New Collages - September 2011
For Painting: Mixed Media with Jackie Sylvia
All the work here is Mixed Media Collage focused on my subject matter of mixed race identity. In these pieces I've created exotic heads / creatures. I suppose the idea behind these creatures was a combination of a few things...
~ people telling me my being mixed race is exotic.
~ wanting to create my own "mixie" creatures, something to relate to, something for others to relate to... being able to create my own aesthetic of the mixed race individual.
I constantly feel the need to fill the entire frame of whatever surface I'm working on. I'm trying to challenge this. In the piece above I've experimented with leaving (negative) space around the subject. I'm not sure how I feel about it still, but only time and more experimenting will give a clearer idea.
I continue to use mixed media in almost all of my paintings and collage work. I love glitter and am currently working on the best way to communicate why it is that I love this aesthetic tool. I am also working with the glitter to get the most use out of it, without using the most of it. It has been suggested that I try using the glitter as an object itself in my work. Here it serves an aesthetic purpose while also acting as a mask for the subject.
This piece is by far my favorite! I think the use of glitter and other textural mediums are used decently to frame the face I've created. I think there's definitely a form of balance happening throughout the collage, something I hope to continue in my other collages and paintings.
A different take on the division of face / mixie creature.
I like the use of flowers, that create a curved line for the eye to follow from her hair, around her face and finally off the surface and out of the frame of the image.
I am also interested in experimenting with breaking the frame of my paintings this semester... fingers crossed it goes well!! More to come. :)
